DISSECTION SERIES

Students will dissect preserved specimens and study the evolutionary history, external and internal anatomical features, tissues, organs and systems, with emphasis on the interrelationships of animal and plant life.

Flower, Frog, Squid and Shark dissections are offered.

MICROSCOPES

From the "wee beasties" known only to the first microscopists, to the micro-world revealed to the modern user of the light microscope, this class will reveal, in exquisite detail, the life forms that are all but unknown to most people. Help your students to really "get small."

PROTISTS

Ciliates (e.g. paramecia), flagellates (e.g. euglena), and cytoplasmic streamers (e.g. amoeba) are studied under high magnification to investigate life functions such as feeding, locomotion and defense.

CELLULAR BIOLOGY

Anatomy and physiology are emphasized. Microscopes are used to probe the mysteries of the basic unit of life, the cell, using specimens from the various kingdoms of life.

BODY SYSTEMS & BONES

Explore the organization of a typical vertebrate body, from the skeletal system through all the other major systems, using preserved and live specimens from many different vertebrate groups.

DOCTOR'S TOOLS

Students will use stethoscopes, blood pressure monitoring equipment, lung function testing equipment, and other apparatus to discover how their bodies work.

RESPIRATION

The cardio-pulmonary system will be explored, using pulmonary function testing equipment that you probably won't see in any other classroom short of medical school. Your students can measure all sorts of lung functions like inspiratory and expiratory rates and capacities and have great fun doing it!

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM/CARDIOPULMONARY

These two systems are so intimately associated that one cannot be taught without mentioning the other. Your students will measure blood pressure, pre-and-post vigorous physical activity heart rates and, using stethoscopes, listen to the sounds of their own hearts and the blood inside. Pulmonary function testing equipment is also used to measure lung capacities.

SEASONAL STUDIES

Using actual preserved specimens and live specimens caught in the field, students will study seasonal influences on the animal and plant kingdoms. Choose one from among the following:
- CEPHALOPODS- BIRDS
- INSECTS- MAMMALS
- SPIDERS & THEIR KIN- PLANTS
- AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES

FRUIT FLIES & GENETICS

An excellent organism for the study of genetics due to their short life cycle (as little as two weeks), fruit flies present a variety of genetic traits that can be traced from one generation to the next.

EVOLUTION

Nature's rule of "form follows function" throughout the evolutionary history of life on Earth is studied using many specimens, including selections from both the vertebrate and invertebrate groups, from ancient to modern.
