![]() This image, taken at the Science Center, is of Near Earth Asteroid 2004 JP1, approximately two days before it's closest approach to the Earth. At closest approach, the asteroid was approximately 721,000 miles away. At the time that this image was taken the asteroid was approximately 967,000 miles away. The asteroid was discovered on the evening of May 11, 2004, a week before closest approach. Because of its close proximity to the Earth, and its fast motion, the asteroid left a trailed image during the 30 second exposure. The bright star in the field is Tycho 902-1117-1. |
